Frequently Asked Questions
A J-1 visa is a type of cultural exchange visa issued by the U.S. State Department. It allows foreign individuals to participate in educational and cultural exchange programs in the United States, promoting international understanding and cooperation. It's often used for activities such as academic research, teaching, or participating in work-and-travel programs.
The J-1 visa, primarily meant for cultural exchange, remains valid for the duration of your summer camp contract plus an additional 30 days for post-camp travel within the United States. During this 30-day period, which is designed for experiencing and exploring America, employment is not permitted, and you must leave the USA before the 30 days is up.
After completing the application process and securing a suitable camp placement, you'll receive a DS-2019 form. This form functions as an official letter of invitation from the State Department, allowing you to embark on your cultural exchange journey in the United States. You can then take this DS-2019 form to the embassy as part of the visa application process. The typical processing time for receiving your passport and visa is approximately two weeks, although this may vary depending on the individual applicant and the specific embassy location.
